Preserving our world - what can we do?
Reducing, reusing, and recycling are three of the most simple ways to help the environment, and something we can all look to do more of. Cutting down on what you need to throw away and using reusable items is one of the easiest ways to keep the planet healthy. At our on-site restaurant, Hurricane Terrace, we reduce by running a simple, yet tasty menu with locally sourced ingredients and products.
Swapping out plastic bottles for glass bottles, using cotton totes instead of plastic bags for shopping and using refillable bottles for items such as cleaning products are all simple changes that you can implement day to day.

Conserving water is another essential practice that someone can take to help live more sustainably. Little things such as turning off the tap when you are brushing your teeth, putting non-toilet related tissue in the bin instead of flushing it, or taking shorter showers can all have an impact on reducing your water use.
Another essential addition to preserving our world is to be mindful about buying food and other household, personal, and beauty items. It is always worth checking if they are from a sustainable source or brand.
There are so many simple tasks that can help us be more sustainable in our everyday lives, from eating locally to opting for public transport where possible, avoiding unsustainable palm oil products to choosing ethical and eco friendly cleaning products. Making just one or two changes can make a real difference to the world around us without affecting our daily lives significantly.
Effective planning can reduce waste
Planning ahead can help you cut down on the reliance of single-used products, so preparation can mean you have your reusable bags in the boot of your car, your reusable water bottle on hand for filling up with tap water or having a reusable coffee cup on hand for your trip to a coffee shop.
If you want to go the extra mile, having some reusable or wooden cutlery in your car or your bag for when you get a takeaway can also be a simple yet effective swap – especially if this is a common occurrence.
Something else that is worth thinking about ahead of time, especially when you are on holiday enjoying picnics or a beach day, is to ensure to take your rubbish with you and embody to “only leave footprints behind”.
Rubbish can be very dangerous to wildlife and takes an incredibly long time to break down - so, if you do have plastic rubbish, be sure to recycle them once you are able to do so.
Make your holidays more sustainable
Having a break from time to time is essential for maintaining the work/life balance, so what can be done to enjoy a more sustainable holiday?
One of the best options for the environment is to enjoy a staycation, which can help reduce your carbon footprint that is elevated when flying abroad over driving somewhere closer. Having a property to call your own that you can travel to whenever you desire that is within a reasonable travel radius will help lessen your holiday emissions.
It is also important to choose the right holiday homes if you are committed to making a difference. Silverlake’s holiday homes have been designed with the conscious traveller in mind to help to reduce the impact on the environment.
Many of the holiday home designs have been built with solar panels, air-source heat pumps and EV charging, along with features to encourage and support wildlife – ranging from bee bricks to bird and bat houses.
